FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
Prints and matboards
What is a matboard?
In some countries, a matboard is also referred to as a 'passepartout'. A matboard actually has different functions, which are aesthetic, technical and protective. First of all, the matboard needs to provide a beautiful transition between the frame and the print. A good mat, with the right colour and texture, brings out the refinement of the print. The technical function of the mat is to keep the print away from direct contact with the glass or acrylic. Lastly, the quality of the matboard (e.g. no-acid) contributes to keeping the antique print in good condition.
How is the print attached to the matboard?
The print is attached to the backside of the matboard (on a few places only) with pieces of professional thin, acid and wood-pulp free paper coated with a self-adhesive (Filmoplast P90) or similar tape. Only professional products that are recommended for hinging art work to matting are being used.
Where can I best buy a frame that fits with the print that I like?
You can buy standard sized frames anywhere you like, depending on your budget, style and preference. There are many stores and brands that offer frames as part of their interior design and styling collection in their physical shops as well as online. Many offer frames of 21x30 cm (or any other dimensions) in a variety of styles, materials and colours with glass or light-weight clear acrylic front.
What is the quality of the matboard?
The material used for the matboards comes from various professional high quality matboard manufacturers and suppliers based in the Netherlands, mostly Royal Moorman. The back of the mat is made of very high quality paper that contains no acid and is buffered with calcium carbonate to protect the quality of the print.
The matboards are cut to the right size for each print individually by hand with a special cutting tool. For this reason, there may be some outer edges that are not 100% smooth, depending on the top layer of the mat board, such as linen or gold. This will not impact the aesthetics and visual quality of your print though. When framed, you will not be able to see the edges of the mat board.
Can I get the matboard in a different colour?
The colour of the matboard is matched with the colours and/or style of each individual print that is available in the shop. As these are all unique items (there is only 1 of each), it’s not possible to choose a different matboard for a specific print. However, you may want to browse through the offering in the shop to find a print and matboard that does fit with your interior style.
Can I get the matboard in a different (outer) size?
The outer size of the matboards are cut to specific dimensions (mostly 21x30 cm / 8.27 x 11.81 inch) so they easily fit with standard sized frames available at regular stores. Right now, we do not offer matboard sizes and colours on request.
Are your antique and vintage prints originals or modern day reproductions?
All prints offered in the webshop are genuine antique or vintage prints. Antique prints are those made at least 100 years ago and comprise the vast majority of our stock. Vintage prints are those made over 50 years ago. The date each was made is given in the item's description.
